1Is the procedure painful or does it cause any hypersensitivity or redness in eyes?
No, SMILE is minimally invasive and virtually painless method.

There are no cases of hypersensitivity or redness reported with SMILE.

2How long does the procedure take?
The actual laser portion of the surgery takes about 30 to 60 seconds.

The entire procedure, including the removal of the corneal tissue, generally takes 8 to 10 minutes in total.

3When can I return to my normal activities?
SMILE is gentler to eyes hence you can start working on computers within a day of surgery.

This is because there is no ‘cut’ or flap made. The small incision through which the lenticule is removed heals very quickly, by end of the day or next. In most cases, visual acuity is very good one or two days after the operation, and stabilizes within one week. Normally, you will be able to drive, work and participate in sports without glasses or contact lenses within the first week following treatment.

4How safe is the procedure?
SMILE is gentler to eyes which is very safe.
This is because there is no ‘cut’ or flap made.
The small incision through which the lenticule is removed heals very quickly, by end of the day or next.
The cornea is biomechanically more stable after ReLExSmILE that is superior to traditional LASIK and safer in the long term.
The incision made on the cornea is 80% smaller than the flap cut made during conventional LASIK.

5Why do we need SMILE when other procedures are doing fine?
SMILE is FLAPLESS. No flap means
Painless
No complications
No weak cornea
Less Dry eye
No nerves are cut
For those playing contact sports there is no risk of flap displacement.
Gives high stability in the long term with less chance of numbers coming back.
6Is there any age limit for SMILE ReLEx LASER treatment?
It can be done above 18 years. However, eligibility has to be determined through a series of tests.
7Am I a suitable candidate?
Most of the patients suitable for conventional LASIK can also be treated with ReLExSmILE. You have to consult our ophthalmologist for a detailed examination.
8Can both eyes be treated in the same sitting?
Yes, laser procedure is usually done for both eyes at the same time, as we do not ‘enter’ the eye, but just work on the surface; also as both eyes have to recover visually in a binocular way.
9Will I be awake during the procedure?
Yes. You will be awake during the entire procedure. However, we use anesthetic eye drops and you will feel numbness or little heaviness in your eyes with NO pain sensation during the procedure.
10Is SMILE accurate?
YES. It is not just highly accurate but also highly predictable. There is no tissue distortion. Comparison studies with LASIK show better results.
11What is the success rate?
Till date we have never needed to retreat any of our SmILE patients. We have faced no complications such as permanent dry eyes, night vision issues etc. due to our thorough detailed checkup before surgery.
12Will I need to sit in dark room after laser?
No, absolutely not necessary. Routine home light is acceptable. Some may have light sensitivity for a few hours after the procedure, during which time they must shut and rest their eyes. In fact you can start watching TV, reading, and normal routine as soon as you are feeling comfortable.
13Will I still need to wear reading glasses after laser procedure?
As the person`s age increases, ability of the eye to focus on nearby objects decreases. This being age related process, is irreversible and called Presbyopia. Hence everyone above 40 years will need reading glasses even after the laser procedure. But your distance vision will remain corrected.
